This is America, de Childish Gambino, fue lanzado el 5 de Mayo, y hasta el momento ha conseguido cerca de 137 millones de views, aproximadamente 12 millones diarios, logrando ser el #1 en el Hot 100 de Billboard

 

Childish Gambino, alias de Donald Glover, siempre ha hecho fuertes criticas sociales por medio de su profesión, como actor, guionista, comediante y cantante. En esta ocasión, lo hizo de la mano del director japonés Hiro Murai. Curiosamente, fue lanzado a pocos días de las polémicas declaraciones de Kanye West sobre la esclavitud hace 400 años, afirmando que se trataba de una simple «opción«. 

 

El videoclip es una ´masterpiece´ compuesta por bailes llamativos, buscando llamar la atención y distraer de lo que pasa realmente, opacando un caos en el que se mezcla violencia, persecución y racismo. El video muestra sin reparo el conflicto con el control de armas y la discriminación hacia los afroamericanos, apoyándose en referentes históricos y actuales de segregación y asesinatos, sin perder el continuo simbolismo que caracteriza esta pieza audiovisual.

Alusión a Jim Crow

 

El video abre con nuestro artista ofreciendo un baile curiosamente sincopado y enganchador. A medida que se acerca a un hombre que estaba tocando su guitarra, y ahora se encuentra con una bolsa en la cabeza. Aquí se rompen bruscamente las emociones, de pensar “que chévere está” a “que esta pasando aquí?”. Gambino dispara un tiro de gracia a la cabeza de este personaje, imitando la pose de Jim Crow, un personaje del siglo XIX, representante de las leyes de segregación americanas.

 

El racista tío Ruckus

 

Un personaje de la serie animada ‘The Boondocks’. Ruckus representa el auto odio por su propia raza negra.

 

 

    

 

Mas cuidado con el arma

 

En ambos asesinatos, las armas son tratadas con cariño, siendo recogidas con un pañuelo de manera delicada, todo lo contrario a los cadáveres, uno lo recogen deliberadamente y los otros son ignorados. Prioridades claras.

 

 

 

 

La masacre de Charleston

Referencia a la masacre de la iglesia de Charleston el 17 de junio de 2015. Este sector de Estados Unidos concentra una de las mayores tendencias racistas, causa de ello el joven blanco Dylan Roof abrió fuego a la alabanza de esta iglesia asesinando a 9 personas de color.

 

 

 

Policía apocalíptico

«Miré, y vi un caballo pálido. El que lo montaba tenía por nombre Muerte, y el Infierno le seguía» (Ap. 6,7-8). Sencillamente es una representación bíblica de la muerte, una imagen que pasa muy desapercibida, que toca mirar varias veces, al igual que el video en su totalidad.

 

 

 

Arma móvil

La era digital y de los medios sociales han permitido que los celulares sean nuestro mecanismo de defensa para denunciar, en este caso para acusar abusos policiales y raciales, pero esto puede ser un arma de doble filo, ya que actualmente el “reportero” se preocupa más por grabar los acontecimientos que intervenir realmente en dicho evento.

 

 

Fotogramas que cuentan una historia   

Glover montado en un carro, el guitarrista asesinado revive y Sza posando en otro auto, estos colocados con luces estacionarias y puertas abiertas. Estos carros han estado involucrados en maltratos y asesinatos a jóvenes afroamericanos por parte de la policía, por eso la simbología. La cantante Sza hace alegoría a la estatua de la libertad negra por medio de su estilo de peinado, vestimenta y su postura. El guitarrista renacido simboliza el eterno retorno y la continua repetición.

 

 

Corre, Gambino, Corre

La escena final, la fuga del criminal, se siente el desespero en su mirada y su rostro con la oscuridad persiguiéndolo. Es esta parte, la letra dice “Eres solo un hombre negro en este mundo, solo un código de barras, conduciendo autos caros, solo un gran perro, yo ate el mío al patio trasero, esa quizás no sea una buena vida para un perro, para un gran perro”. Al final el mensaje termina siendo para ambos bandos, sin importar quien seas, tanto para la víctima que huye del mal y la violencia, como para el victimario, que por mas crueldad que haya en su corazón, siempre habrá una maldad mayor detrás suyo.

”This is America”, by Childish Gambino, was released on 5th May, and has already received nearly 137 million views (about 12 million a day), putting it at number 1 in the Billboard Hot 100 chart.

 

Childish Gambino, A.K.A. Donald Glover, has always made strong social criticisms through his role as actor, screenwriter, comedian and singer. This time, he did it with the help of Japanese director Hiro Murai. Interestingly, the video was released just a few days after the controversial declarations that Kanye West made about 400 years of slavery, confirming that it revolved around one simple ‘option’.

 

The video is a ‘masterpiece’ involving expressive dance, looking to draw attention and distract people from what is actually happening, obscuring the chaotic events which express a mixture of violence, persecution and racism. The video unashamedly presents America’s
arms conflict and the discrimination against Afro-americans, supporting these with historical and current references to segregation and assassinations, without losing the continuous symbolism that characterizes this audiovisual piece.

Allusion To Jim Crow

 

The sequence opens with the artist (Glover) doing a curious jerky, syncopated dance. Meanwhile a man who was playing a guitar comes into frame, and we see that he now has a bag over his head. Here we may suddenly go from thinking ”How cool is this!?” to ”what is happening here?” Gambino fires a bullet into the back of the man’s head, imitating the pose of Jim Crow, a character from the 19th century who represents American laws of segregation.

 

Uncle Ruckus The Racist.

 

A character from the animated series ”The Boondocks”. Ruckus represents self-hate for his own race.

 

 

    

 

Taking Great Care of the Gun

 

In both assassinations, the weapons are treated with care; delicately taken away in a handkerchief, whilst the corpses fall to the floor. This shows clear priority for weapons over human life.

 

 

 

 

The Charleston Massacre

The video references the 17th June Charleston Church Massacre of 2015. This section of the USA is a concentrated hub of racism, which perhaps caused Dylan Roof to open fire on the worshippers in this church, assassinating nine people of color.

 

 

 

Apocalyptic Police

”He looked, and saw a pale horse. He that mounted it was called Death, and Hell followed him” (Ap. 6: 7-8). This could easily be a Biblical representation of Death, an image that passes by almost unnoticed, that you need to view a many times over, just as with the rest of the video, to get its full impact.

 

 

 

Mobile Army

Social media and the digital era have allowed us to use our phones as a method of self defense through exposure, and in this case to expose events of political and racial abuse, though this could be a double-edged sword because these ‘reporters’ are more concerned with filming the events than intervening.

 

 

 

 

Still Frames That Tell A Story

Glover standing on a car, the assassinated guitarist revived and Sza posing on the bonnet of another car – all with parking lights on and doors open. These cars have been involved in abuses and assassinations of young Afro-americans by the police, and therefore are an important symbol. The singer Sza represents an allegory to a black Statue of Liberty due to her hairstyle, clothes and posture. The reborn guitarist symbolizes the cycle of life and rebirth and continuous
repetition.

 

 

Run, Gambino, Run

The final scene, the escape of the criminal, you can feel the desperation in his face with the darkness pursuing him. In this part, the lyrics say ”You just a black man in this word, you just a barcode, driving expensive foreigns, you just a big dawg, I kenneled him in the backyard, no proper life to a dog, for a big dog.” Ultimately, the final message sides with both groups, no matter who you are, both for the victim who flees from violence as for the victimizer, as much cruelty as there may be in your heart, there will always be a bigger
evil behind you.
